Background

'Pioneer Spirit' is how the Ottawa Journal described it when local volunteers built this rink from scratch during Canada's 1967 Centennial -- funded by a $2,500 grant and a lot of sweat equity. They even repurposed the leftover dirt to build the toboggan hill next door. Nearly 60 years later, the Queenswood Heights Recreation Association is still the crew behind the ice every winter.

Boards go up each winter beside an open puddle rink, so there's room for a pickup game and a separate patch for anyone just going in circles. Permanent lights and a supervised, community-kept ice surface make this a reasonable weeknight-after-dark stop, with washrooms and a place to lace up inside the community centre — though the site isn't set up for accessible access.
